7 Fall Trends You Already Own ( You Just Forgot About Them )
October 2, 2026

Every fall, fashion tries to convince us we need a whole new wardrobe. New coat, new boots, new everything. But here's the thing I've learned after 10+ years in fashion retail and just as many years thrifting: the best fall trends of 2026 are probably sitting in your closet right now, buried under summer stuff you haven't put away yet.
Before you spend a dollar this season, go dig. Here's what to look for.
Leopard Print - leopard is the trend that never actually left - it just naps for a season and comes back louder. Check for that scarf, blouse, or pair of flats you forgot about.
How to wear it now: One statement piece at a time, paired with solid neutrals. A leopard scarf over an all-black outfit reads expensive. Head-to-toe leopard reads costume. You know the difference.
Oversized Blazers - that boxy blazer you bought years ago and stopped wearing because it felt to big? It's the silhouette of the season. Oversized tailoring is all over the fall runways.
How to wear it now: Push up the sleeves, belt it at the waist over a dress, or throw it over a simple tee and jeans. The "borrowed from someone taller" look i s the whole point.
Burgundy and Oxblood - Go to the very back of your closet - past the stuff you actually wear - and look for deep reds, wines, and maroons. Found a burgundy bag, boot, or sweater? That's this fall's color story.
How to wear it now: Burgundy is a neutral in disguise. It pairs with black, camel, gray, denim, and cream. One burgundy piece instantly makes a basic outfit look like you planned it.
Denim on Denim - say what? I know, I know. Denim on denim is hard for a lot of people to picture. The rule is simple: two washes should NOT match. Light jacket, dark jeans. Dark shirt, light jeans. The contrast is what makes it look intentional instead of accidental.
How to wear it now: You already own both halves of this outfit. Break up the denim with a belt or none-denim shoe so it doesn't blue into one big jean.
The Chunky Knit - that heavy sweater you pull out every October without thinking? It's a trend. Big, cozy knits dominated the fall collections, and yours has been doing this longer than the runway has.
How to wear it now: Front-tuck it into high-waisted jeans and add a boot with a little heel. The tuck is what keeps a chunky knit from wearing you.
Wide-leg trousers - If you bought wide-leg pants anytime in the last few years, congratulations - they're back on the runways. Tailored, flowy, pleated, all of it.
How to wear it now: Balance the volume on the bottom with something fitted on top. A tucked-in-tee, a cropped sweater, a blazer with shape. Let the pants be the statement.
Knee-high boots - the pair you've had since forever. The ones that still look good because boots don't really age. Knee-highs are the boot of the season, usually worn over skinny jeans or under a midi skirt.
How to wear it now: Over jeans, let a couple inches of denim show between the boot and the knee - or tuck fully for a cleaner line. Under a midi skirt, they're the easiest fall outfit formula there is: boots + skirt + sweater, done.
The Real Takeaway
Fashion's best-kept secret is that "new" is usually just "old, worn confidentely." Trend cycle - what felt dated two years ago is fresh again, and the fastest way to look current is to shop your own closet first.
And if you dig and find a gap? That's what the thrift store is for. Some of my favorite fall pieces cost less than a latte. Happy hunting.
